Pericarditis complicating rheumatoid arthritis.

چکیده
The frequent occurrence of adhesive pericarditis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis has been recognized in pathological studies (Bayles, 1943; Graef, Hickey, Altman, and Rosenthal, 1948). In a study of autopsy material, Sokoloff (1953) found evidence of healed idiopathic pericarditis to be seventeen times more common among patients with rheumatoid arthritis than among other patients. Clinically, however, this condition is observed much less frequently; indeed Wood (1952) makes no reference to rheumatoid pericarditis in his textbook of cardiology. In this communication we report three non-fatal cases of arthritis of the rheumatoid type associated with pericarditis, in two of whom L.E. cells were found in the peripheral blood.

He had a 6-year history of seropositive erosive rheumatoid arthritis with numerous extra-articular ...
متن کاملA case of rheumatoid pericarditis with high concentrations of interleukin-6 in pericardial fluid.
A case of rheumatoid pericarditis that developed into cardiac tamponade without deterioration of rheumatoid arthritis is described. The concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in pericardial fluid was notably increased compared with serum. IL-6 may be associated with progression or maintenance of rheumatoid pericarditis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common cause of disability and deformity for which treatment is often of limited value in controlling the disease process and outcome. Infliximab (chimeric antibody to tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα)) is clearly efficacious in up to 70% of patients, but treatment may be complicated by the development of infections that are occasionally serious and life threatening...
